Unix Installation Procedure

Downloading UNX50AO6.exe and creating the Unix installation diskette

  1. Using a Windows PC, download the self-extracting installation program UNX50A06.EXE from the link above. Be sure to download to your hard drive, NOT to a floppy disk. If you are not experienced at downloading files from the web and are not sure where place this file, we suggest downloading it to your PC's "desktop". This will make it easy to find after the download is complete.

  2. Insert a blank floppy into the diskette drive of your Windows PC.

  3. Double-click on the downloaded file. This will begin the disk creation process. (Remember that this file MUST BE RUN FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE, not from a floppy, since this program MAKES a floppy for you.) Follow the instructions on your screen. When this process is complete, you have a Unix installation diskette containing the A06 patch, ready for installation on your Unix system.

Installing the Unix patch on the Unix server from the installation diskette

  1. Place the installation floppy you just created into the diskette drive of your Unix server. Log in as root on the server and at the prompt (a # sign), type xinstall and press enter. When you are asked “First Floppy?”, type y for yes, and press enter.

  2. The genadm menu will appear. Select choice 2 from the menu (“Stop the multi-user server”). You will be presented with a menu with your shutdown alternatives. Select choice 2 ("Unconditional Shutdown").

NOTE: If you do not see this second menu after selecting choice 2 on the genadm menu, (i.e., the genadm menu remains on screen), this is not a problem. This merely means that no multi-user server was running at this time. You may proceed to the next step.

  3. Select choice 14 from the genadm menu (“Truncate the database before image file”). This will take a minute or two to complete, during which time there is no screen activity and very little hard drive activity. The system may appear to be hung, but is NOT. The system will return you to genadm as soon as it is finished.

  4. When the genadm menu reappears, type ssmupg then press enter (all lower case).

  5. You will be asked to confirm that prior steps in the installation routine have been completed. Type y for yes and press enter.
The installation will now begin to patch your system.

  6. After this process completes, the message "Installation Complete" will appear, followed by a message stating that the system is about to shut down.

Remove the installation disk now. Do not allow the system to reboot with this disk in the drive.

  7. When the system says “Safe to power off or press any key to reboot”, power it off briefly, then turn it back on and boot it to a login prompt. Log in as genadm and select choice 1 (“Start the multi-user server”).

  8. Quit out of genadm and log into Senior Service Manager as normal. You are now up and running under Senior Service Manager 5.0 A06.
