What is a Database?
I guess you could call it an electronic
filing cabinet. Picture an actual filing cabinet where all of
your information is kept. We're not talking about a shop
management program per se, just the place where all of the
information is stored.
Now picture a filing cabinet from Wal-Mart. On paper it does
everything a filing cabinet should do, stores files. But we're
not talking about "on paper" are we? The world is rough and
dirty, now imagine the abuse of a filing cabinet made from tin.
Now picture someone standing on the filing cabinet like a ladder
to change a light bulb. Can you imaging a Wal-Mart filing
cabinet holding up to that abuse, I can't. How should I describe
it, twisted, bent, falling over. Now how about a commercial
filing cabinet? Stand on it and the only problem is foot prints.
Where do you want to be standing when your Microsoft database
based shop program becomes twisted, bent or just plain crashes?
